VO X A8 Joint Design Curriculum: Exploration of Materials & the Design of Flower Island Wedding Hall

VO Art Union and A8 Design Center initiates the joint education curriculum "The LUXELAKES Flower Island Wedding Hall", which starts from the actual demand, takes the LUXELAKES Flower Island as the research object, and UN Studio senior architect Arturo Revilla as course master, to guide students to complete site investigation, concept extraction, manual model fabrication, concept design and a series of in-depth and well-rounded research and practice.

Regardless of their deep relation to the configuration of our physical environment and their connection to a wide range of material processes, architectural practices and design studies have historically concerned themselves with investigations of the formal, leaving the material on a secondary plane. This privileging of form is deep-rooted, with the material rarely being understood outside its effects or practical dimension. Restricted to the exploration of techniques, methods and protocols of implementation, the material is usually reduced to sheer processes of materialization and subordinated to the architectural idea. As a result, the architect has not only confined himself to the role of the ‘form giver’, but has circumscribed methodologies and tools utilized to develop architectural proposals around the orthographic drawing, ‘leaving the material to fill the spaces between the lines’ (Lloyd Thomas, 2007). This phenomenon can be described as ‘the transcendent imposition of the architect’s vision of form on chaotic matter’. Apart from the properties of the material that could well inform the work, ‘the architect is blind to such traits and despises ‘surrender’ to matter; he only sees and commands’ (Protevi, 2001).

(Ficino,1985)。

In the context of this tradition, where coherence is in the ‘eye of the beholder’, architecture has been understood as the conceptual framework of a building and its main task as that of participating in the communal effort to communicating ideas. The architect, the keeper of the means of translation, enacts the relation between the ideal and physical reality. As one of the most influential humanist Italian scholars, Marsilio Ficino, wrote: ‘if anyone asks in what way the form of the body can be like the form of reason of the soul and mind, let them consider the building of the architects’. (Ficino, 1985).

From Vitrubio to Alberties Linamenta, Federico Zuccari’s Disegno Interno all the way to Le Corbusier (1927) famous statement that ‘architecture is pure creation of the mind’, architecture has been conditioned by the mechanics of the idea and the architect has been seen as a communicator. The workshop challenges this tradition and uses material manipulation processes as a tool to investigate the brief as well as alternative design methodologies.
