After the field research in Luxelakes in January, MIT course “Hacking Chengdu: Activating New Urban Development in China” operates as a design workshop course and continues the research and design during the Spring semester. Located in the burgeoning Tianfu New District of Chengdu City, the Luxelakes Eco-City is a 1400-acre new town integrating residential, business, recreation and entertainment areas in a rehabilitated lakeside environment. Given that half of the development is already built, how do we “hack” the existing to activate community identity, open up novel programmatic possibilities and enhance sustainable growth? Through the site visit and analysis, user data analysis, and interviews with stakeholders including community groups, design teams, as well as development and management teams, the group of nine students has proposed research topics in urban theory, gamified urban development, urban ecology, water management, children’s education, etc. The final review of the course will take place in mid-May.

Our project applies the strategies of urban“成都城市调研:激发中国新发展”课程中期汇报

gamification to address ghost city issues in China. Gamification is a trending design strategy that’s garnering attention for its ability to utilize the experience of play to incentivize individual contributions toward groups or public goals. Taking Luxelakes as our experimental grounds, we are designing a series of interactive add-on installations for A7 hotel island with the aim of invigorating communal spaces, encouraging interactions among visitors and transforming public places into shared, participatory forums and playgrounds. We are also designing a series of digital interfaces to augment the experience of the physical environment as a means to navigate an already design-rich urban space. We believe that urban gamification methods can be applied to many more existing and future Chinese cities and can be an effective means to introduce Smart City technologies into our urban environment.

Biodiversity is the extraordinary variety of life on Earth in all of its forms and interactions. The Mountains of Southwest China contain an incredible amount of plant and animal diversity. The area covers 10% of China but is home to over 40% of its plant species. Luxelakes is situated in the garden city of Chengdu in the most botanically rich province in China, however the ecocity lacks an abundance of plant species. Out of the 12,000 plant species native to the Mountains of Southwest China, the Luxelakes contains less than 270. The aim of this project is to develop strategies to create novel ecosystems at Luxelakes through enriching the vegetation. The project proposes new plantings, places, and programs. This will provide new opportunities for community activities around the themes of art, recreation, education, and science. The deliverables of the project will be a report with recommendations on how Wide Horizon can retrofit the vegetation of Luxelakes while promoting community engagement.

Water is the body and soul of Luxelakes. The quality of the water system not only affects our daily lives and operations here, but also subtly dictates our association and dissociation with the water. Meanwhile, we face a realistic problem, one that concerns with the need to maintain Luxelakes water sustainably, both in terms of environment and finance. We respond with a digital community engagement platform that takes the advantage of technology to bring about better awareness of the Luxelakes water system. Through the immersive reality technologies and gamification, we enhance people’s experiential, playful interactions with the water with bottom-up water conservation activities. In the same way, productive and learning activities are more closely knit with socio-ecological knowledge about the lake. For the managerial organizations, the platform provides better insights on water user behaviors, channel of user feedback, and prediction on maintenance needs. The platform is also an open system for community organizations and interested stakeholders, enabling them to create their own water engagement journey digitally. Streamlining water maintenance operations at the top and encouraging active conservation at the bottom contributes to our end goal – achieving economically sound water management and shaping a long-term model of living with water.

    Urban Isolation:
    Multi-enclave Region Across Scales

    Luis Alberto Meouchi Velez

One of the most noticeable aspects of the urban environment, during our visit to Chengdu, was the constant disconnection of the urban blocks within the city. Each one of the blocks and uses within them seemed to operate exclusively within its own boundaries and limits, unaware of their external contextual conditions. Further, such exclusive system did not only happen on a block scale, isolation was a constant on a systemic and multi-scalar manner, in which borders of distinct natures, on an aim to connect the city as a whole, limited to connect smaller urban tissues. After acknowledging that such forms of urbanism happened not only Chengdu but all across the country, it became relevant to develop a research study of such isolation conditions in order to understand the distinct urban elements which incentivize it, ranging in scales from superblocks and highways, to fences and high-rises. This research attempts to answer the following questions: What are the origins, future and implications of segregated developments? And what are the multifactorial drivers of multi-enclave and isolated regions?

As the society started to consider more and more on the children’s education, it seems that the traditional educational system, which centers around home and school, cannot satisfy the need for the children’s multidisciplinary development. According to the architect Christopher Day, who has extensive experiences in designing schools and early childhood centers, the environment is not only a space where they live and grow up every day, but also contains the day-to-day, dynamic yet “hidden curriculum”. Such hidden curriculum would incentivize creativity, elasticity, social responsibility for children, which is missing in the traditional format of education. But environment education can be limited by a lot of factors in urban environments, and most children are still experiencing the linearity between the two points of home and school. On the other hand, Luxelake’s geographical qualities and its natural environment provides the best site for children’s environment education. With design and technology going hand-in-hand, our research aims to transform the Luxelake site to a playful classroom, and an educational playground. Through the interventions of smart technology and the organization of communal events, we intend to enable children to learn through exploration and play.

Could you open up your mind that when you want to have a coffee in the parks of Luxelakes, an automatic mobile coffee bar which can offer it customized to you immediately. Or you can rent this auto space with fitness function by phone, and do exercise efficiently on the way home. Even imagine that an unmanned vehicle can bring you home from the airport or the station without waiting in the queue. We plan to design a smart movable space, which can not only catch user need and arrive automatically, but also collect and analyze behavior data from users continuously. It can be movable vending machine, entertainment space, or even can be a station which can create community lifestyle sustainably.
