Water is the body and soul of Luxelakes. The quality of the water system not only affects people’s daily lives and operations here, but also subtly dictates their association and dissociation with the water. Meanwhile, there is a realistic problem, one that concerns with the need to maintain Luxelakes water sustainably, both in terms of environment and finance. The team responds with a digital community engagement platform that takes the advantage of technology to bring about better awareness of the Luxelakes water system. Through the immersive reality technologies and gamification, the team enhances people’s experiential, playful interactions with the water with bottom-up water conservation activities. In the same way, productive and learning activities are more closely knit with socio-ecological knowledge about the lake. For the managerial organizations, the platform provides better insights on water user behaviors, channel of user feedback, and prediction on maintenance needs. The platform is also an open system for community organizations and interested stakeholders, enabling them to create their own water engagement journey digitally. Streamlining water maintenance operations at the top and encouraging active conservation at the bottom contributes to the design team’s end goal—achieving economically sound water management and shaping a long-term model of living with water.

The design team take a data-driven approach that leverages the social media data of search frequency for water-related terms in Luxelakes community forum, by visualizing it into a word cloud that directly highlights how community members imagine the water and associate it with other concepts.

The design team’s research have inspired them to propose a refined problem statement: How might  Luxelakes raise the awareness of the water ecosystem, enhance the people-water association, and encourage bottom-up water-sustainable behaviors to the lake, such that to serve the long-term lake management goals?

The design team responds to that question by proposing LikeLake, a community engagement platform that aims to promote active participation in sustainable water system management by raising residents’ and visitors’ awareness of the water system in Luxelake and instilling socio-ecological knowledge about the lake through human-nature interaction.

The design team’s vision for the platform follows this model, represented by the convergence of water maintenance cost and willingness to pay. By promoting voluntary community participation in water conservation, the overall water management cost can be driven down; on the other hand, such actions produce narratives that invoke a sense of attachment to the water system and hence increase the willingness to pay for water management in the community. By closing the gap in a ten-year timeframe, this project can help accomplish a smooth transition to community water management in Luxelakes.

With that in mind, the design team analyzed the user space and selected residents and visitors as the target groups. They base their decision on two reasons. First, residents and visitors are greater in number and density of interaction with water. Second, government and property management involve in one-way interactions with the water system, as the feedback from water is transmitted indirectly through residents and visitors. Residents and visitors, on the other hand, engage in two way interactions, with immediate actions and reactions in plural forms. That gives them a wider space to design and implement their solution in a variety of scenarios.

First, the design features an online+offline personalized experience for residents to take water samples (around the lake), through AR+voice interaction+Geospatial guidance and cooperation with MyH2O volunteer organization to achieve educational and community engagement objectives.

The design team also created an offline experience for visitors to explore water species and ecological system (in the lake), through the on-boat interactive screen and voice interaction and cooperation with water transport management group and LeHu water entertainment vendor to achieve educational and engagement objectives.

People are always the decisive factor in water management. Fortunately, the LUXELAKES community has shown much care and enthusiasm for the water environment. The design team believes that with the help of LikeLake, they can sustainably manage the water and make a new long-term model of living with it.

I think it is really great thinking, in putting the public engagement into the water conservation. My understanding is, from the beginning you try to propose an economically-sound water management solution, so I was wondering how do you analyze the current cost and benefit of water management? Is the water system currently managed in a conventional engineering way? How would you compare that with the green infrastructure solution? On one of the slides, you mentioned that you are proposing to engage the government into this mechanism, I wonder how you incentivize them to participate? As you may know, in the U.S., water feature is often reflected as a “premium” in real estate price, and government can benefit from the raised property tax base. But it’s a different story in China, I would like to hear from your thoughts on that.

When we talk about social capital, it means that we should have a social agreement or the culture to organize all the resources. What I would like to know is, in your opinion, what is the main culture to organize such a project which involves such amount of social participation in LUXELAKES.

I just want to say that I love this project a lot. I noticed that the students were from different backgrounds and I am just amazed how they consider about the interface in great detail. For example, when they use the interface on iPad, the mouse is like a transparent circle, representing a finger I suppose; and in terms of the interface of the computer, it looks like an arrow. What’s more, I saw the part which is about the description of a lady, which is in very typical internet language. In sum, there is huge amount of information in that interface and I am really shocked by the workload. If I would add something, it could be shown, just roughly or conceptually, some results or certain feedbacks of the research especial when you are talking about interactions, because all of those feedbacks or ideas are likely to shape the community.
