8 Books Recommended for A8 VOL08: Michael Maltzan

    Modern Architecture, A Critical History

    Kenneth Frampton

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

This acclaimed survey of modern architecture and its origins has become a classic since it first appeared in 1980. For the fourth edition Kenneth Frampton has added a major new section that explores the effects of globalization on architecture in recent years and examines the phenomenon of international celebrity architects who are increasingly active all over the world. The bibliography has been updated and expanded, making this volume more complete and indispensable than ever.

    Reason for Recommendation

This was the primary text used during my first history class in architecture school. It is telling that we learned about modernism first, although Frampton connected modernist achievement to a longer and more complete history of architecture extending back through classical architecture. The idea that the buildings we make in our time are tied to this long history and responsibility to architecture as a cultural discipline is very important to me, and started with this book.

    Oppositions Reader

    ed: K. Michael Hays

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

Oppositions, founded in September 1973 and discontinued in 1984, was a journal for ideas and criticism in architecture published by the now-defunct Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York. Editors Peter Eisenman, Kenneth Frampton, and Mario Gandelsonas assembled essays by leading architecture practitioners and theorists. The earliest issues are now collectors' items, and the journal continues to influence each new generation of architects. The Oppositions Reader collects the most important essays from the 11 year history of Oppositions.

    Reason for Recommendation

The journal “Oppositions” was at the center of the many spirited debates about architecture I had with my classmates in school. Oppositions was right in the middle of the arguments for modernism vs. post-modernism. It wasn’t clear which would win, but it pushed one to clarify their own feelings and ideas about the future of architecture.

    Hearts of the City

    Herbert Muschamp

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

他未完成的那本书的片段也包括在内,即《A Dozen Years》、《Metroscope》和《Atomic Secrets》。

From the late Herbert Muschamp, the former architecture critic of The New York Times and one of the most outspoken and influential voices in architectural criticism, a collection of his best work. The pieces here—from The New Republic, Artforum, and The New York Times—reveal how Muschamp’s views were both ahead of their time and timeless. He often wrote about how the right architecture could be inspiring and uplifting, and he uniquely drew on film, literature, and popular culture to write pieces that were passionate and often personal, changing the landscape of architectural criticism in the process. These columns made architecture a subject accessible to everyone at a moment when, because of the heated debate between modernists and postmodernists, architecture had become part of a larger public dialogue. One of the most courageous and engaged voices in his field, he devoted many columns at the Times to the lack of serious new architecture in this country, and particularly in New York, and spoke out against the agenda of developers. He departed from the usual dry, didactic style of much architectural writing to playfully, for example, compare Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao to the body of Marilyn Monroe or to wax poetic about a new design for Manhattan’s manhole covers. One sees in this collection that Muschamp championed early on the work of Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Thom Payne, Frank Israel, Jean Nouvel, and Santiago Calatrava, among others, and was drawn to the theoretical writings of such architects as Peter Eisenman. Published here for the first time is the uncut version of his brilliant and poignant essay about gay culture and Edward Durrell Stone’s museum at 2 Columbus Circle. Fragments from the book he left unfinished, whose title we took for this collection—“A Dozen Years,” “Metroscope,” and “Atomic Secrets”—are also included. Hearts of the City is dazzling writing from a humanistic thinker whose work changed forever the way we think about our cities—and the buildings in them.

    Reason for Recommendation

No other critic has written so profoundly about architecture and its importance in culture. Rereading the many essays in this book is a reminder of why architecture matters.

    Alvar Aalto – l’Oeuvre Complete

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

Alvar Aalto, born 1898 in Kuortane in Finland, is one of the last of the works personalities of the twentieth century architecture generation. His buildings, from urban planning to simple residential buildings, function as a single organism. He was never interested in formal architectural theories. The path of each building is fascinating, from the first fleeting sketches to the completed work handed over to the client, and strongly defined by the personality of the architect. Everything remains alive and in motion, seems casual and natural as if it grew naturally out of the surroundings. The unique sense for the importance of individual components and construction phases makes it possible to identify a complex of individual style, even in modest construction tasks. Hence, Aalto's designs and experiments result in furniture, lamps, curtains, and many other things that make a house habitable. The central theme of his work is the unity of idea, form, and way of life.

This exceptional Complete Works edition documents the enormous spectrum in the oeuvre of one of the most influential architects of the 20th Century. Published between 1929 and 1970, in close collaboration with Le Corbusier himself, and frequently reprinted ever since, the eight volumes comprise an exhaustive and singular survey of his work.

    06
    James Stirling – Rizzoli Monograph

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

James Stirling Buildings and Projects is a hefty monograph about the versatile career of the British architect James Stirling (1926–1992). The book opens with a comprehensive introduction to Stirling’s life and career by Colin Rowe. The buildings and the projects are presented in a chronological order. The presentation starts with Stirling’s Thesis of 1950 and completes with the design for the Villa Lingotto in Turin in 1983. The buildings and the projects are explained with thorough project descriptions and displayed with an ample selection of photographs and architectural drawings. Stirling has never professed to be anything more than an architect preoccupied with ‘the job’. Stirling has declined to assume any public role as either theorist or critic. He is careful to avoid involuted verbal formulae. He never talks about infrastructure, superstructure, syntactical structure, semantics or semiotics. He has no desire to utter extravagant pronouncements. He does not exhaust himself in pretentious manifestoes against the Positivist establishment. Instead, very privately – and to think about Voltaire’s Candide – he has chosen to cultivate his own garden. Unlike the majority of architects, he is a cultural conservative, concerned with the concrete, rather than a would-be innovator, concerned with the abstract.

    Robert Venturi

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

First published in 1966, and since translated into 16 languages, this remarkable book has become an essential document of architectural literature. A "gentle manifesto for a nonstraightforward architecture," Venturi’s Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture expresses in the most compelling and original terms the postmodern rebellion against the purism of modernism. Three hundred and fifty architectural photographs serve as historical comparisons and illuminate the author's ideas on creating and experiencing architecture. Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture was the winner of the Classic Book Award at the AIA's Seventh Annual International Architecture Book Awards.

    Alvaro Siza – in/discipline

VOL08——Michael Maltzan

    简介

    Description

The Four Dwellings in Matosinhos(1957),Boa Nova Tea House(1963)和位于葡萄牙Leça da Palmeira的Ocean Swimming Pool(1973),以及最近完成的工作和在建项目,包括位于韩国的Mimesis Museum(2009), 位于法国的Church in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande(2018)和位于纽约的Residential Tower(在建)——这也是他在美国的第一个项目。

The essential survey on Pritzker Prize–winning architect Alvaro Siza’s restless creativity, in 30 projects over the past 60 years. Once, on the inner flap of one of his sketchbooks, Pritzker Prize–winning Portuguese architect and educator Alvaro Siza (born 1933) described himself and his work with self-deprecating disavowal. Rather than identifying his discipline as architecture, he identified it as “as little as possible.” This confessional note is the point of departure for Alvaro Siza: (In) Discipline, a retrospective survey that highlights the currents of disquiet and insubordination within the renowned architect’s creative method and production, surveying Siza’s design process. The publication starts with Siza’s first works in Matonsinhos―the Four Dwellings in Matosinhos (1957), the Boa Nova Tea House (1963) and the Ocean Swimming Pool in Leça da Palmeira, Portugal (1973)―and includes recently completed work and projects under construction, including the Mimesis Museum in South Korea (2009), the Church in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, France (2018) and the Residential Tower in New York (ongoing), his first project in the US.

    Reason for Recommendation

The last 5 books are all related to particular architects who have had an influence on my ideas about both form and space in architecture. It is impossible for me to boil any of them down to a few sentences individually. What is personally true is that the work of each of these architects continues to resonate for me, and even after many years of studying them I find new things in their work that are able to be resonate with how my work and thinking is evolving.
