Visits - Alexandre Chemetoff: Town and Territory

Alexander Chemetoff

    Description

The French landscape architect, city planner, and architect Alexandre Chemetoff (b. 1950) achieved international renown for his "Jardin de Bambou" at the Parc de la Villette in Paris and his design of a park in Villejuif. Visits takes a close-up look at his work of the last fifteen years, not, however, in the form of a traditional monograph. Instead, Chemetoff visits the sites of five of his major works: Blanquefort/Bordeaux, Ile de Nantes, Angoulême, Vallée de la Bièvre/Paris, Grenoble, Nancy, and Rennes. He is accompanied on his visits by conversation partners who are recognized experts in the field: Dominique Alba, Jean-Louis Cohen, Christophe Girot, Patrick Henry, Alain Léveillé, Sébastien Marot, and Michel Velly. In this way, the principal themes of Chemetoff’s creative work come up for discussion in a lively, critical, and fascinating manner. It is especially illuminating to discover how well a given project has stood the test of time, how it has changed over the years, and what Chemetoff would do differently today.

    Reason for Recommendation

The French landscape architect Alexander Chemetoff introduced his own way of working in this book. The preface is juxtaposed with photos and words to tell of an "open mind to the world" attitude, a vision beyond professional knowledge and a "disconnected" view of architecture. In the spring of 2011, I had the honor to listen to the lecture given by this old gentleman, which was the most inspiring lecture for me during my two years of study in the School of Design of Harvard University. Later, I read the preface of the book over and over again so that it was almost recitable, and the English was very concise and exquisite, quite like Lao Tzu. This is the first book I would recommend.

    Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies

Rafael Moneo

    Description

The internationally acclaimed architect Rafael Moneo is known to be a courageous architect. His major works include the Houston Museum of Fine Art, Davis Art Museum at Wellesley College, the Stockholm Museum of Modern Art and Architecture, and the Potzdammer Platz Hotel in Berlin. Now Moneo will be known as a daring critic as well. In this book, he looks at eight of his contemporaries—all architects of international stature—and discusses the theoretical positions, technical innovations, and design contributions of each. Moneo's discussion of these eight architects—James Stirling, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and the partnership of Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron—has the colloquial, engaging tone of a series of lectures on modern architecture by a master architect; the reader hears not the dispassionate theorizing of an academic, but Moneo's own deeply held convictions as he considers the work of his contemporaries. More than 500 illustrations accompany the text.

Discussing each of the eight architects in turn, Moneo first gives an introductory profile, emphasizing intentions, theoretical concerns, and construction procedures. He then turns to the work, offering detailed critical analyses of the works he considers to be crucial for an informed understanding of this architect's work. The many images he uses to illustrate his points resemble the rapid-fire flash of slides in a lecture, but Moneo's perspective is unique among lecturers. These profiles are not what Moneo calls the "tacit treatises" that can be found on the shelves of a university library, but lively encounters of architectural equals.

    Reason for Recommendation

A classic of architectural criticism by Raphael Moneo, famous Spanish architect, architectural theorist and educator, has been translated into Chinese several years ago. The book is a compilation of his lecture notes from the 1990s, when he taught architectural review at the School of Design of Harvard University. This book takes the most representative eight architects, from the spectrum of history, society, culture and life, to interpret the eight architects' ideas and works. This way of comment breaks the narrow academic rut from theory to theory and restores the unique historical context of every architect's growth and practice. Behind the global vision is the gentle tradition of European humanist architecture represented by the old gentleman.

Writings on Architecture (Writings by Architects)

Alvaro Siza

    Description

Throughout his career, Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza has candidly written down his private thoughts on the complexities and artistic doubts which permeate contemporary architectural practice. Here, presented for the first time, is a comprehensive selection of Siza's most significant texts, many of them previously unpublished. Organized thematically and accompanied by explanatory sketches, his writings lucidly evoke his aesthetic values and the simplicity and purity of his architecture.

    Reason for Recommendation

Architectural essay by famous Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza. The words are more like Siza's soliloquies. Siza loved poetry, and the words he used were reminiscent of his house, often unexpected and occasionally challenging. Sometimes when you think you understand something, it's probably just your own understanding. Even if you ask him face to face, Siza will probably be noncommittal. His words have an open sense of meaning, especially like his sketches, where the intention is looming. He used these words to explore and express meaning beyond the words. Siza was probably the last surviving figure in European humanist architecture, the last architect who could be called the Renaissance man. For Chinese architecture readers, reading this book should understand that the culture we grew up in is really different.

Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees

Lawrence Weschler

    Description

When this book first appeared in 1982, it introduced readers to Robert Irwin, the Los Angeles artist 'who one day got hooked on his own curiosity and decided to live it'. Now expanded to include six additional chapters and twenty-four pages of color plates, "Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees" chronicles three decades of conversation between Lawrence Weschler and light and space master Irwin. It surveys many of Irwin's site-conditioned projects - in particular the Central Gardens at the Getty Museum (the subject of an epic battle with the site's principal architect, Richard Meier) and the design that transformed an abandoned Hudson Valley factory into Dia's new Beacon campus - enhancing what many had already considered the best book ever on an artist.

    Reason for Recommendation

This is a biography by the art scholar Lawrence Weschler, who has been following the Los Angeles artist Robert Irwin for 30 years. Irwin's work is generally classified as phenomenological art. Although his works are derived from his diligent exploration in his early years, at the mature stage, they seem to jump out of the history of art. They are very simple, but they have the power to direct people's hearts, revealing the ultimate way of freedom (or "freedom"). As the title says, "To watch is to forget the name of the object being watched." This is also the concept of Zen to go, to go. Concept-oriented creation is, in essence, a rehash. Irwin says in the book, "The Renaissance man told the world what he thought was interesting, and then tried to make it happen and control it. And I'm waiting for the world to tell me so I can respond. Intuition takes the place of logic. I'm just involved in the situation, and after a few weeks of observation and hairline adjustments, the appropriate solution will automatically announce its arrival." In the biography, Irwin's life is probably a journey of transformation from "Renaissance man" to "situationist".

Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing the American Landscape

Charles E. Beveridge (Author), David Larkin  Editor

    Description

A man of passionate vision and drive, Frederick Law Olmsted defined and named the profession of landscape architecture and designed America's most beloved parks and landscapes of the past century--New York's Central Park, Brooklyn's Prospect Park, the U.S. Capitol grounds, the Biltmore Estate, and many others. During a remarkable forty-year career that began in the mid-1800s, Olmsted created the first park systems, urban greenways, and planned surburban residential communities in this country. He was a pivotal figure in the movement to create and preserve natural parks such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Niagra Falls. He also contrbuted to the design of many academic campuses, including Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Today there is a resurgence of interest in Olmsted's work and legacy in both the United States and Europe. This timely volume presents the breadth of Olmsted's work in beautiful color photographs by Paul Rocheleau and illuminates Olmsted's role as an indefatigable administrator and social reformer. Olmstead's career reflected a deep concern for fostering community and using the restorative effects of natural scenery to counteract the debiliting forces of the modern city.

    Reason for Recommendation

This isn't the best book to introduce Olmsted and his brilliant career, but it's a good primer. Olmsted can be said to be the founder of landscape architecture as a discipline. He coined the term Landscape architect. I have always felt that architects should not be ignorant of landscape, because architecture is really not an isolated "representation of form under the sun". What architects create is the environment in which we live, and the house is only a very limited part of this environment. The book's subtitle says Olmsted designed America's landscape, and it's true. Perhaps because he came of age at a time when American culture was booming, Olmsted's legacy is unmatched. Understanding his thoughts and work allows us to see and understand the profound background and background of American landscape architecture. Looking back, we can understand the illusion behind the apparent prosperity of landscape architecture and landscape design industry. This kind of nonsense is irrelevant in the United States, because the patterns and systems of the natural and urban landscape of the United States have been completed by Olmsted and his successors, and even a slight degeneration of the discipline does not hurt the larger picture that the American landscape has stabilized. However, the natural and urban landscape in our country is undergoing rapid changes under the impetus of economic forces. Landscape architecture cannot be merely a foreign article of  the times. Our time calls for a Chinese version of Olmsted.

    Geoffrey Bawa: The Complete Works

    David Robson

    Description

Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and the buildings he created have become legendary in the region and influential around the world. Few architects achieved his harmonious fusion of local building traditions with modern forms and sensibility. Bawa's early works were houses that artfully married vernacular styles and responses to climate and site with a modern architectural vocabulary. Soon his talents were applied on a larger scale, to the Sri Lanka parliament, a number of carefully situated and designed hotels, schools, offices and other public buildings. The summation of his oeuvre is symbolized by his own two residences – a house in Colombo and a residential complex in Lunuganga – whose evolution eloquently reflect Bawa’s career and personality. This ambitious publication is a comprehensive documentation and appreciation of Geoffrey Bawa and his work and includes a rich portfolio of his most important works, including some rarely published projects. An exhaustive reference section includes a complete chronology.

    Reason for Recommendation

It is a complete collection of works by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and has been translated into Chinese. The charm of Bawa's work is hard to capture in the fashion of architectural photography, so the photographs in this book are not alluring. But the author structures the book chronologically, linking the life of the architect to his work, and drawing a very vivid picture of Bawa and the world he lived in. Bawa's architecture does not come out of architecture. His architecture comes from the world of life and can also come back and blend into the world of life. If I can combine this book and go to Sri Lanka to find Bawa's works, it will be a very rare experience and inspiration.

The Architecture of Happiness

Alain de Botton

    Description

What makes a house truly beautiful? Why are many new houses so ugly? Why do we argue so bitterly about sofas and pictures - and can differences of taste ever be satisfactorily resolved? To answer these questions and many more, de Botton looks at buildings across the world, from medieval wooden huts to modern skyscrapers; he examines sofas and cathedrals, tea sets and office complexes, and teases out a host of often surprising philosophical insights. The Architecture of Happiness will take you on a beguiling tour through the history and psychology of architecture and interior design, and will change the way you look at your home.

    Reason for Recommendation

The Architectural reverie of Alain de Botton, a brilliant British scholar, is also translated into Chinese. In my opinion, architects should learn to talk with the world outside architects and have a pan-cultural embrace and vision. Otherwise, architecture will go into narrowness and decline in the narcissism of architects. It was the first book I read that discussed the connotation and extension of architecture in approachable language, and its writing style and stance later influenced my own architectural writing style.

Garden in a Garden

Jin Qiuye

    Description

This book is a collection of the author's architectural essays for many years. The main theme of the book is the concept of "the garden in the garden", and the articles are organized around the "relationship between man and nature". Including comments on the architecture and thoughts of Bawa and Wright, the design and essays of the author’s own house, essays on the stylistic issues of architectural criticism, architectural education, the space language of Ming Dynasty novels and illustrations, the design related to changes in the city, and the design of Long Museum Architecture review, and two dialogues.

    Reason for Recommendation

A collection of essays by architectural scholar Jin Qiuye. Mr. Jin is one of the few writers in the country who is adept at explaining Chinese and Western architectural culture in approachable language, and this is his second anthology recently published. As for the architectural sage in the era of modernism, Jin has his unique and transparent understanding, and his writing can penetrate into the personality of architects and the social and cultural context in which he is located, which is also his inspiration. "Rhetoric and sincerity", Jin's persistent use of writing to polish ideas is admirable. His article on Geoffrey Bawa was one of the most insightful reviews of Bawa I've ever read.
