    1980 – A Piece by Pina Bausch

Pina Bausch's "1980" work is one of the rare dance works of German dance pioneers. It was the first work created after the death of Pina's professional and life partner Ralf Borzik. It tells the story of a sick widow, two deceased sons and a man. They are in the contiton of "no relatives, no friends, but have cancer". It seems that this is very similar to the plight of Pina in reality. However, Pina interspersed with magic and drama in "1980" through her  optimism, allows the viewers to drift between reality and dreams.

Pina Bausch was born 1940 in Solingen and died 2009 in Wuppertal. She received her dance training at the Folkwang School in Essen under Kurt Jooss, where she achieved technical excellence. Soon after the director of Wuppertal's theatres, Arno Wüstenhöfer, engaged her as choreographer, from autumn 1973, she renamed the ensemble the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Under this name, although controversial at the beginning, the company gradually achieved international recognition. Its combination of poetic and everyday elements influenced the international development of dance decisively. Awarded some of the greatest prizes and honours world-wide, Pina Bausch is one of the most significant choreographers of our time.

    Creative Theme

Shortly after Pina's husband, Ralf Borzik, died of cancer, Pina, who was in grief, created this highly personal and emotional performance to commemorate her lover. "1980 – A Piece by Pina Bausch" brought a piece of Prussian pastoral poetry, full of psychedelic summer and childhood, and lively beauty contests by 19 dancers (12 women, 7 men) that year. Everyone crowded on the stage, sitting unscrupulously on the lawn and enjoying the endless beauty brought by the sun. A strange tea party, a visiting magician, and a mysterious animal, quietly fuse with people on the lawn into an impressionist painting.

    Scene Layout

The creation of "1980" further deconstructed the boundaries of the theater field and allowed the natural environment to be carried out in the theater. In order to maximize the opening of the stage, it made the turf fill the entire stage, forming a flat and full-vegetated park, and at the same time, the deer became one of the stage actors, and acted as a permanent observer of the event.

The construction of the real stage makes the story of the drama closer to life, and adds more commonality between the audience and the plot. The men and women are sunbathing naked on the lawn, the tourists are playing the piano leisurely, and the delicately dressed girls are lying down. Everyone is enjoying the summer sun. The fidelity of these scenes makes it difficult to distinguish whether it is indoor or outdoor, real or fake. The scene becomes a living painting, and the story unfolds in our eyes.

    Behind Story

“1980 – A Piece by Pina Bausch”是皮娜纪念Ralf Borzik的最美好的作品。

Ralf Borzik plays an important role in Pina's life. During 1973-1980, Ralf Borzik not only acted as the stage and costume designer for all of Pina's original plays, but also supported the work of Pina's dance theater in many aspects, includes putting forward his own ideas, doubts and suggestions for modification. As a set designer, Ralf Borzik uses natural elements, water, soil, vegetation and other concepts to blend well with the drama. At the same time, he seems to get rid of daily life in the creation of costumes, but still keeps the fashion style elegant and rich. Ralf Borzik is a colleague, friend and lover for Pina in both career and life.

In 1980, Ralf Borzik left due to illness, which brought a heavy blow to Pina's life. These unfortunate experiences in life always made Pina Bosch looks sad. "I dance because I am sad", this is the most influential quote of Pina Bausch. She dances because of grief, but she is accustomed to using cold humor to tease people in the world. She triggers common human thinking, expresses her attitude towards life, transforms laughter into contemplation, and turns calm into sensation through dance and drama. The beautiful music, curvaceous dance, undulating plot and groundbreaking stage layout made Pina's works become  masterpieces and  eternal classics in the world. The company and encouragement of friends are also indispensable. "1980-A Piece by Pina Bausch" is Pina's most beautiful and impressive work in memory of Ralf Borzik.
