    Description

There are thousands of dikes in the Netherlands. The dike is a key element in our landscape and has great cultural and historical value. The author lives on the embankment on Waalbandijk, rides a bike along the winding Omringdijk in West Friesland, or visits the monument on Afsluitdijk. However, quite a few dikes failed to meet current safety standards. In order to ensure the safety of people, knowledge about dikes is needed. It’s time to use the standard work: Dutch Dikes to give an overview and a vision for the future.

    Description

In 1954, Amsterdam had about 300 playgrounds designed by Aldo van Eyck (1918-1999), which gave him the opportunity to start building one of the most important buildings in the history of modern architecture: the Amsterdam Orphanage (1955-1960). In a new book with illustrations, you can find every detail, material, color of every highlight with multiple gazebos, picturesque domes and cleverly connected terraces. Before completion, architects Buckminster Fuller, Louis Kahn and others visited the masterpiece and wrote in a lyrical way.

    Reason for Recommendation

This book is a detailed interpretation of the Van Eck Orphanage project, with photography, pictures, text descriptions, and detailed hand-painted. I used to pass by this building every day when I went to work in the Netherlands, but I didn't know that there are so many well-designed points, which is very worth reading.

    TEAM 10

Jos Bosman, M. Christine Boyer, Zeynep Celik, Ben Highmore, Tom Avermaete

    Description

TEAM 10 is a team of European architects that played a leading role in the debate on cities and architecture in the 1950s and 1960s. The project gathers the key figures of TEAM 10, focusing on the most active members: Alison and Peter Smithson in England, Aldo van Eyck and Jaap Bakema in the Netherlands, Giancarlo de Carlo in Italy and Georges Candilis and Shadrach Woods in France. It  has brought new insights and a large number of unknown documents for the closed collections and study of archives.

TEAM 10 was crucial to the development of post-war architecture and urbanism. TEAM 10 first questioned the large scale, technocratic and abstract nature of modernist architecture, and advocated the introduction of human scale, the importance of communities, and the continuous transformation process from place to production. Their influence on future generations of architects is huge. One can say that since the 1970s, many achievements in this discipline have been realized by the problems and designs defined by TEAM 10.

    Reason for Recommendation

It records a group of young architects who knew CIAM, but eventually opposed Le Corbusier. They made a lot of crazy urban designs in 1953-81 in order to respond to the welfare state, consumer society, and modernization. The text drawings are quite exciting.

    SOS Brutalism

Oliver Elser, Philip Kurz , Peter Cachola Schmal

    Description

Widely disliked in their heyday and only recently beginning to be appreciated, brutalist buildings around the world are at risk of being lost—in many cases to demolition, and in some to insensitive reconstructions that would forever alter buildings’ appearance beyond recognition. SOS Brutalism is a distress signal, an attempt to galvanize public awareness of the architectural heritage that is at risk of being forever lost.

The book, result of a major collaborative research undertaking by Deutsches Architektur Museum DAM and Wüstenrot Foundation, presents a global survey of brutalist architecture of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, covering around 120 key buildings from the period from around the world, many of them little-known and in imminent danger of destruction. Case studies of hotspots such as the Macedonian capital Skopje or New Haven, Connecticut, and essays on the history and theory of brutalism round out this groundbreaking and lavishly illustrated book.

    Reason for Recommendation

It records 120 brutalist buildings around the world, and nearly a hundred scholars have investigated and documented them. These rough "concrete monsters" are not within the focus of mainstream domestic construction media, and they are also incompatible with the sweet and fresh aesthetic of Internet celebrities, but they are extremely vital and characteristic.

    How Small?How Vast?How Architecture Grows

(Junya Ishigami)

    Description

For Junya Ishigami (born 1974), architecture is a field of infinite possibilities that affect every area of life, raising existential questions and requiring both scientific and artistic observation. Here, the Japanese architect demonstrates what an environment that bases social life on organic principles might look like.

Junya Ishigami’s work process is strictly methodical and oriented toward expanding the existing boundaries between design, architecture, and geography. The aesthetics of concentration, the transparency, and the simplicity of his ideas, models, and buildings are based on complex creative processes. Ishigami presents his holistic search for the right proportions in this book

The layout is fresh, and the relationship between architecture and natural landscape at different scales is considered. It is simple and easy to understand with a little bit interesting things.

    Reason for Recommendation

An overview of the history, urban design and different types of thoughts. It basically covers mainstream urban design trends in Europe and America, as well as typical urban design cases. The good thing is that after reading it, I found that the urban design is actually incomprehensible and gave up the ambition to save the world. The disadvantage is that I am even more confused after reading it.
