    8 Books Recommended for A8 VOL07: Stu/D/O Architects

    Stu/D/O Architects:

Up, Down & Other Opposites with Ellsworth Kelly的儿童书籍。 Exhibit A: Exhibitions That Transformed Architecture和Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow中当代设计师的作品和设计思维的汇编文本。 Labyrinths & Mazes: A Journey Through Art, Architecture, and Landscape,它影响了E区多层次的联系和引人注目的复杂性。

    Stu/D/O Architects:

Designer of LUXELAKES Watertown A8 Parcel

The following books are a wide selection of design titles that have influenced our own design process, that we feel would serve well in cultivating young designers at the Design Center. Part of the selection are books concerning Art that are experiential or relate to space and resonate with thinking about the built environment, including Olafur Eliasson's Experience, or children' s book Opposites with Ellsworth Kelly. Others are thought-provoking titles involving design theory including classic Poetics of Space, and texts that compile work of contemporary designers and design thinking in Exhibit A: Exhibitions that Transformed Architecture, and Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow. Involving specifically with our design of Luxelakes' A8, we have selected Rem Koolhaas' research-based publication Elements of Architecture and Labyrinths & Mazes: A Journey Through Art, Architecture and Landscape that influenced the multi-level connections and compelling complexity of Zone E.

Labyrinths & Mazes: A Journey Through Art, Architecture, and Landscape

    Francesca Tatarella

VOL07——Stu/D/O Aechirects

    简介

    Description

The labyrinth is one of the world's oldest symbols, and its meaning is often shrouded in myth and mystery or ties to religious rites. Today, this enigmatic form inspires artists to create their own interpretations in different, even unusual, ways, including by working with materials as varied as ice, snow, salt, wood, stone, glass, cement, and metal. This new collection features both classical examples and the best contemporary projects, showcasing work by artists, landscape artists, and architects from around the world. The diverse and stunning examples include pavement labyrinths of thirteenth-century French cathedrals, a historic English turf maze, Renaissance hedge mazes, and numerous present-day projects by artists and architects, including BIG, Chris Drury, Richard Fleischner, Dan Graham, Robert Irwin, Arata Isozaki, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, and Billie Tsien and Tod Williams.

    Reason for Recommendation

A collection featuring classical and contemporary projects, Labyrinths and Mazes influenced our thinking of the multi-level connections and complexities in A8’s Zone E. Exploring the maze as both form and space in fields of art, architecture and landscape, the text include materials as varied as snow, wood, cement and metal. A catalogue of a spatial condition that also serves as symbol, our thinking of how people meander, interact and wander through space, whether it be in art installation or a public building such as Zone E itself, is called into question.

Up, Down & Other Opposites with Ellsworth Kelly

phaidon first concepts with fine artists

VOL07——Stu/D/O Aechirects

    简介

    Description

Ellsworth Kelly's paintings and sculptures take center stage in this creative visual presentation of opposites. The pairings range from together/apart to vertical/horizontal, from full/empty to front/back [of a canvas!], providing readers with both expected and unexpected visual vocabulary. Images include Ellsworth's most famous works, as well as some lesser-known pieces, providing a stunning representation of colors and dimensions. The book is playfully written and created in partnership with the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation.

First Concepts with Fine Artists系列的一部分,它提供了理解颜色、尺寸和(正如建筑师所希望的)图形/地面关系的视觉指南。

A lovely children’s book exploring the foundation of visual vocabulary in pairings such as together/apart and vertical/horizontal through the works of one of 20th-century most influential painters, Ellsworth Kelly. Part of Phaidon’s First Concepts with Fine Artists series, the book provides a visual guide to understanding colors, dimensions and (as architects would hope) the relationship of figure/ground.

Ellsworth Kelly: Thumbing through the Folder: A Dialogue on Art and Architecture with Hans Ulrich Obrist

VOL07——Stu/D/O Aechirects

    简介

    Description

In this Dialogue on Art and Architecture, Ellsworth Kelly (born 1923) reminisces with Hans Ulrich Obrist about his early career, his teachers (Max Beckmann, Brancusi, Léger and Vantongerloo) and particularly on the relation of his work to architecture, while describing his many collaborations in this field. Throughout this beautiful publication runs a series of collaged and overpainted postcards by Kelly, dating from 1949 to 1984, which are reproduced here for the first time. These postcards, referred to throughout the dialogue, are unlike any of Kelly's paintings and sculptures, particularly in their use of body imagery; others are closer to familiar Kelly terrain, as projections of torn colored paper forms onto found landscapes and architecture. This artist's book makes a wonderfully unusual record of a warm encounter.

    Reason for Recommendation

In conversation with art critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Ellsworth Kelly recalls the root of his work and its relation to architecture “architects are usually the first people who understand my work”. As Kelly describes his process of translating what was originally a two-dimensional artform literally outside of its frame into pieces that embody and challenge traditional notions of planes and dimensionality, the text catalogues Kelly’s emphasis on line, color and form and architecture’s influence on his thinking and vice versa.

Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow

VOL07——Stu/D/O Aechirects

The first comprehensive survey of the 20th century’s aspirational, radical and futuristic visions of the home, this richly illustrated publication showcases a range of ideas and plans for the future―from the prescient to the fantastical―that designers produced as they imagined new ways of living at home and on the move, independently and collectively, with more and with less.

    Reason for Recommendation

Exploring a topic that is perhaps most relevant to current circumstances, Home Futures: Living in Yesterday’s Tomorrow is organized in six thematic sections including privacy, smart home, compact living, self-sufficiency, nomadic lifestyles and home as idyllic landscape. Texts about dwelling and its future by architects and theorists including Pier Vittorio Aureli and Jing Liu of SO-IL give insight into how we define (and redefine) home and its human relation.

This collection is a look through the microscope at the real fundamentals of our buildings, revealing the essential design techniques used by any architect, anywhere, anytime. Conceived by Rem Koolhaas and made with the Harvard Graduate School of Design, it is a primordial toolkit to understanding how seemingly stable elements are actually in constant evolution.

    Reason for Recommendation

Rem Koolhaas' research-based publication, Elements of Architecture provides an essential study on each of the architectural components. A complete exploration of each element, the almost encyclopedia-like text gives analysis through historic and contemporary examples. Involving specifically with our design of LUXELAKES' A8, we looked into stairs, one of the fifteen catalogued elements, in exploring the multilevel connections and complex circulation of the various zones within Zone E.

    08

    Poetics of Space /

    Gaston Bachelard /

VOL07——Stu/D/O Aechirects

    简介

    Description

Bachelard applies the method of phenomenology to architecture, basing his analysis not on purported origins (as was the trend in Enlightenment thinking about architecture) but on lived experience in architectural places and their contexts in nature. He focuses especially on the personal, emotional response to buildings both in life and in literary works, both in prose and in poetry. Bachelard also discusses psychoanalysis and the work of the psychiatrist Carl Jung. Comparing the psychoanalytic and phenomenological approaches to his subject matter, he sees merit in both, but finds the phenomenological approach preferable. Bachelard implicitly urges architects to base their work on the experiences it will engender rather than on abstract rationales that may or may not affect viewers and users of architecture.

    Reason for Recommendation

A timeless title in design theory and architectural thinking, Poetics of Space takes readers through spaces and metaphors with inviting philosophy, giving an almost phenomenological thinking to architecture. Bachelard’s prose describes spaces that are filled by thoughts, spaces to ponder and environments that hold our consciousness in dreams and memories: “We are never real historians, but always near poets, and our emotion is perhaps nothing but an expression of a poetry that was lost”.
