    Mongrel Rapture , ARM architects

VOL14——James Brearley

    简介

    Description

ARM is identified as one of a handful of architectural practices internationally that operate in a mold “Radical Post Modernism”. Eschewing notions of good taste and formal purity, ARM opts instead for an “architecture of ideas”. Drawing from diverse sources that range across everything from Le Corbusier to Robert Venturi, computer programming to biblical verse. ARM’s architecture has been alternately celebrated and execrated by critics and the public alike. The practice has produced some of the most important public buildings in Australia, including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra (2001), Melbourne Recital Centre and MTC Theatre (2008), and the Perth Arena (2013).

"Mongrel Rapture" combines extensive photography and plans of all of ARM’s major buildings with essays from a range of highly regarded critics, including Jencks, Mark C Taylor, Leon van Schaik, Harriet Edquist and others. This is a vital publication for anyone with an interest in this practice and Australian architecture’s very particular strain of "Radical Post Modernism".

    简介

    Description

A Pattern Language / A Timeless Way of Building,  Christopher Alexander et al

VOL14——James Brearley

    简介

    Description

    《The Timeless Way of Building》是Christopher Alexander在1979年出版的一本书,它提出了一种以设计为主题思想的新的建筑理论,这种理论依赖于对设计模式的理解和配置。

"A Pattern Language" is a book about architecture, urban design and community livability published in 1977. The authors are Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray Silverstein, etc. of the Environmental Structure Center of Berkeley, California. This book creates a new language, the author calls it a pattern language, which uses patterns to describe problems and then provides solutions. In this way, the author intends to give ordinary people, not just professionals, a way of working, allowing them to work with their neighbors to improve towns or communities, design houses for themselves, and collaborate with colleagues to design offices, public buildings or schools.

“The Timeless Way of Building” is a book by Christopher Alexander published in 1979 that proposes a new theory of architecture (and design in general) that relies on the understanding and configuration of design patterns. Although it came out later, it is essentially the introduction to “A Pattern Language ”by the same author, providing the philosophical background to the Center for Environmental Structure series. It has had a huge influence on creative thinking, especially in the areas of architecture and software design.

Networks Cities , James Brearley + Fang Qun

VOL14——James Brearley

    简介

    Description

Network thinking has been a long time brewing in urban design theory. Networks are permeable and open spatial and social structures that facilitate flows of people, ideas, products, information and capital. Kim Dovey, the professor of Architecture and Urban Design at University of Melbourne, has said : “The structure of urban networks is strongly linked to the social and cultural richness of a society and to the urban and architectural richness of the city.”As China moves forward with its urbanization on a massive scale, almost simultaneous developments of very large tracts of land are the norm rather than the exception.

As being a foreign designer of this vigorous city movement, James Brearley tries to solve large districts and the single function planning of urban problems with his unique perspective and clear mind on the deep review by putting forward the concept of a city. Brearley also added some illustrative works that he has done or is doing in various parts of China to enhance the concept of “Network Cities”.

The Local Code , Michael Sorkin

VOL14——James Brearley

    简介

    Description

Design for Sorkin is much more than lines on paper or a scale model. It is also the codes that determine to a large degree what those lines must follow and what shape those models will become. For most architects building and zoning codes are mandates to follow. But what if they could develop their own? What would they dictate? How would they be written? And what would be their underlying goals? Sorkin did what most architects and urban designers would never spend the time on: he developed a code, complete with a Bill of Rights and designed for a Utopia that will never exist. Hardly a text to be read cover to cover, Local Code is more a template for students of urban design to use in their projects.

Delirious New York , Rem Koolhaas

VOL14——James Brearley

    简介

    Description

In "Delirious New York", Rem Koolhaas believes that "Manhattan's architecture is a pioneering paradigm of congestion, Manhattan has produced its own metropolitanism-congestion culture", and proposed three congestion culture. Theorem: Grid, lobotomy, schism.

The grid represents the urban planning of Manhattan, showing a dialectical relationship between freedom and freedom; anterior lobe incision represents the rupture of the relationship between inside and outside the skyscraper; split represents the split between the upper and lower floors due to the stacked tofu-like spatial composition of skyscraper Status. Koolhaas believes that the congested culture "resolves the long-standing conflict between form (outside) and function (inside), so that Manhattan's buildings are both architectural and high-performance machinery; modern and timeless."
