A8 Design Center: What is the ideal design library? Can you recommend a library to A8 Design Center? Where did this library impress you?

Zhao Yang: The ideal design library should be a library dedicated to enlightening the soul. Design books do not need to be complete. Instead, you should look for 100 books recommended by the most unique designers in the world that influence their design concepts and methods. Of course, these books are not limited to design. These one hundred books form a three-dimensional small universe, allowing those who are really interested in the wisdom of design to have the opportunity to explore the depths.

Regarding the ideal library, I would recommend Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library. The space of this library can make people contemplate. The sincere creation of a true architectural seeker, it condenses the human spirit and the high-dimensional state of spirituality. Such a space can stir and even inspire the low-dimensional mind. Of course, don't forget that Exter is surrounded by forests. The aura of nature is very important to enlighten the mind.

    About Exeter Library

"The quality of a library, by inspiring a superior faculty and attracting superior students, determines the effectiveness of a school. No longer a mere depository of books and magazines, the modern library becomes a laboratory for research and experimentation, a quiet retreat for study, reading and reflection, the intellectual center of the community.… Fulfilling needs of a school expected eventually to number one thousand students, unpretentious, though in a handsome, inviting contemporary style, such a library would affirm the regard at the Academy for the work of the mind and the hands of man.”—— Louis Kahn

    Architecture overview

– Robert McCarter

“From the very beginning of the design process, Kahn conceived of the three types of spaces as if they were three buildings constructed of different materials and of different scales – buildings-within-buildings.”– Robert McCarter

Kahn structured the library in three concentric square rings. The outer ring, which is built of load-bearing brick, includes all four exterior walls and the library carrel desks immediately inside them. The middle ring, which is built of reinforced concrete, holds the heavy book stacks. The inner ring is a dramatic atrium with enormous circular openings in its walls that reveal several floors of book stacks. The library has an almost cubical shape: each of its four sides is 111 feet (33 m) wide and 80 feet (24 m) tall. It is constructed in three concentric areas (which Kahn called “doughnuts”). The outer area, which houses the reading carrels, is made of brick. The middle area, which contains the heavy book stacks, is made of reinforced concrete. The inner area is an atrium.

While Louis Kahn favored simple materials such as brick and concrete, he used them in new ways. One of his favorite sayings was, "I asked the brick, 'What do you like, brick?' And brick said, 'I like an arch.'" In addition to his use of these materials, Kahn is known for his use of natural light. The new library at Exeter, like his other later works, is suffused with light, which changes the character of its spaces depending on time of day, season, and weather. He believes that the emphasis should not be on housing books but on housing readers using books. It is therefore desirable to seek an environment that would encourage and insure the pleasure of reading and study."

The Library's Ottaway/Bown Adams Silent Film Library is a collection of more than 300 films produced in the United States, England, France, Germany and Russia. In addition, there are numerous online databases that provide access to journals, magazines, and newspaper articles from around the world.
