8 Books Recommended for A8 VOL 22: EKAR Architects

    EKAR Architects

EKAR believes the architecture is the place that originated from a divisibly mixture of human usabilities occurred through the thinking process, analysis and connections based on different conditions and contexts which are surrounded in every dimension of each specific location. Nature, society, culture, behaviour, taste and time are reflected in a unique architectural work as beautiful aesthetic senses. Every piece of EKAR creation is like research combining science and art together to bring out proper design efficiency to create a sense of place which will lead to positive changes and expand the boundaries of design to the whole society.

    Weather Architecture / Jonathan Hill

VOL22—EKAR Architects

    简介

    Description

"Weather Architecture" further extends Jonathan Hill's investigation of authorship by recognising the creativity of the weather. At a time when environmental awareness is of growing relevance, the overriding aim is to understand a history of architecture as a history of weather and thus to consider the weather as an architectural author that affects design, construction and use in a creative dialogue with other authors such as the architect and user. Environmental discussions in architecture tend to focus on the practical or the poetic but here they are considered together. Rather than investigate architecture's relations to the weather in isolation, they are integrated into a wider discussion of cultural and social influences on architecture. The analysis of weather's effects on the design and experience of specific buildings and gardens is interwoven with a historical survey of changing attitudes to the weather in the arts, sciences and society, leading to a critical re-evaluation of contemporary responses to climate change.

    Reason for Recommendation

We believe that the true beauty of architecture is in the things around it, not the architecture itself. “Weather Architecture” expands and discusses the environment and architecture in depth. Architecture weathering with time is not different from nature and environment and extends the history, society and culture that affect the environment.

The Little Book of Hygge / Meik Wiking

VOL22—EKAR Architects

    简介

    Description

The Danish word hygge is one of those beautiful words that doesn't directly translate into English or Chinese, but it more or less means comfort, warmth or togetherness. Hygge is the feeling you get when you are cuddled up on a sofa with a loved one, in warm knitted socks, in front of the fire, when it is dark, cold and stormy outside.

Denmark is the happiest nation in the world and Meik puts this largely down to them living the hygge way. They focus on the small things that really matter, spend more quality time with friends and family and enjoy the good things in life. The Little Book of Hygge will give you practical steps and tips : how to pick the right lighting, organize a dinner party and even how to dress hygge, all backed up by Meik's years of research at the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen.

It's a book that brings us the concept and philosophy of living happily, related to light and fire, and can be reminiscent of designs that will bring human enjoyment by nature.

The Critique of Judgement / Immanuel Kant

VOL22—EKAR Architects

    简介

    Description

    《Critique of judgment》是德国哲学家伊曼努尔·康德创作的美学著作,该书首次出版于1790年,是康德的哲学三部曲中的第三部,前两部是《Critique of Pure Reason》和《Critique of Practical Reason》。

“Critique of judgment” is an aesthetic work created by German philosopher Immanuel Kant. It was first published in 1790 and is the third of Kant's philosophical trilogy. The first two are “Critique of Pure Reason” and “Critique of Practical Reason”.

The first part of the book on aesthetics is "the criticism of aesthetic judgment", which discusses the problems of genius, art and aesthetic image. The book also discusses that aesthetic taste is not based on the concept, but also based on the contradiction of the concept of "Antinomy". Kant opposed both German rationalist aesthetics and British empiricist aesthetics, and demanded that the two be reconciled. In his opinion, beauty lies in form and excludes all practical interests or purposes; It emphasizes that beauty is the unity of variety, the expression of harmony and the symbol of morality.

    Reason for Recommendation

It is useful for us to ask questions about beauty judgments with things around us.

Between 2005 and 2011, architect Rem Koolhaas and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist interviewed the surviving members of Metabolism―the first non-Western avant-garde, launched in Tokyo in 1960, in the midst of Japan’s postwar miracle. Project Japan features hundreds of never-before-seen images―master plans from Manchuria to Tokyo, intimate snapshots of the Metabolists at work and play, architectural models, magazine excerpts, and astonishing sci-fi urban visions―telling the 20th-century history of Japan through its architecture.

In Praise of Shadows / Junichiro Tanizaki

VOL22—EKAR Architects

    简介

    Description

In Praise of Shadows is a poetic paean to traditional Japanese aesthetics – in a free-ranging style that moves from architecture to No theatre, and from cookery to lighting, Tanizaki teaches us to see the beauty in tarnished metal, the sombre dignity in unglazed pottery, the primacy of organic materials that bear witness to the regular touch of human hands. It is also astonishingly prescient, offering a gentle warning against the quest for airbrushed perfection, and reminding us that too much light can pollute and obscure our natural world. This book is in fact a portal. Reading it, you will be led by Junichiro Tanizaki’s light touch into a mysterious and tranquil world of darkness and shadows, where gold flashes in the gloom and a deep stillness reigns.

    Reason for Recommendation

A thin book. more of an article or an essay really, which just poses the traditional Japanese aesthetics of home design with the Western-style. It touches on everything from architecture, to women, to toilets, and generally makes a stark contrast between East and West. It makes many things fall into place for me regarding Japanese art, architecture, literature, film, and food.

A House For The Mind / Dom Hans Van Der Laan

VOL22—EKAR Architects

    简介

    Description

Dom Hans van der Laan was a Dutch architect and a Benedictine monk living in a monastery.

In addition to four monasteries and one house, Dom Hans van der Laan is famous for his architectural theory, which still resonates with architects around the world. He is a prolific architectural theorist whose main contributions are the basic principles of architecture and the combination of spatial and philosophical concepts with practical design tools. His main invention is a proportional system called "plasticity number", which he believes is the basic response to perception, spatial quality and structural elements. "A House for the Mind" creates a tangible link between Van der Laan’s theory and practice for a wider audience.

    Reason for Recommendation

Another very interesting way to develop philosophy conceptual to be physical architecture, a search for the archetypal basis of the act of building. Seeing architecture not merely as the expression, but as the precondition of human culture, Hans van Der Laan believes that its principles must be sought within architecture itself, rather than in technological, social, or ideological factors.

10 x 10 is a kaleidoscopic view of new architecture in the world today. 100 emerging architects have been selected by 10 leading international architecture curators and critics. Each critic has also selected and listed 10 cultural references - including designed objects, books, films, themes, and movements - to reveal a dynamic range of influences in today's design environment.

The book is unique in architectural publishing and provides a truly global view of the most imaginative and important architects not only of today but also of the future. From traditional to conceptual, this book mirrors the immensely diverse factors that form and fuel architectural practice and experimentation, to illustrate the most innovative responses to changing technologies and social conditions.

    Reason for Recommendation

The 1st architecture book of my life. My dad bought it as a birthday gift for me when I was young. This book took me out of my youthful highs to the vast world that has never been seen before, to know things outside of the pyramid of learning. There are many more interesting things all over the world. Then I decide to study Architecture instead of Music. Therefore, I become me today.
