    Description

This book concentrates Gu Cheng's elegant prose writing. Gu Cheng is one of the few geniuses harvested in contemporary Chinese literature. As time passed, his importance became clearer and clearer. The text of "Gu Cheng Zhe Si Lu" was basically formed during Gu Cheng's departure from the country after May 1987. These Gu Cheng's later thoughts are scattered in conversations, interviews, and speeches. Their presentation is improvised and fragmented, which helps us establish the wisdom of a peaceful life. In the book, more than 20 paintings by Gu Cheng are also selected. The reason why Gu Cheng did not choose to become a painter perhaps painting depends more on economic conditions than writing poetry. And he has always hated being held back by material factors.

This collection is the essence of the four-volume "Selected Works of Gu Cheng", because Gu Cheng's speech is usually improvised or instinctive, so we can start reading from any page in it. There are often reverberations and surprises: How could such a genius exist. "A thoroughly honest person never faces choices. That path will always be presented to you clearly and unambiguously. This has nothing to do with your vision. Just like you are an apple tree, you long for oranges, but You still have an apple honestly." This is Gu Cheng, a person with a heart of innocence, and the one he most hopes to achieve.

    Description

This book is the transcript of a series of lectures given by Hou Hsiao-hsien, the most important representative of Taiwan's new film, in 2007 at Hong Kong Baptist University. It is the first comprehensive review of his creative process. The book is mainly divided into 6 parts: Hou Hsiao-hsien's film direction, the relationship between film sincerity and reality, film aesthetic beliefs, talks about French director Bresson's films, Hou Hsiao-hsien's dialogue with Hong Kong film critics, and the present and future of Taiwanese films. At the end of the book, there is a chronology of director Hou Hsiao-hsien's works. In the book, he counts each of his films in detail, and talks a lot about the stories and technical details of the film, just like the ability and the process of deliberation written down in poetry. Hou Hsiao-hsien said in the lecture that others are also talking about himself, with theories, concepts, feelings, insights, experiences and stories. They are mixed one by one. It sounds like gossip, but in fact it is unreasonable and self-conscious. There is also a lot of actor's material in the book, such as saying that Hsu Qi is "very tough" and that Carina Lau is "too smart", but these words cannot be understood only literally.

    Reason for Recommendation

"My ability lies in observation and selection", "The relationship between the truth and reality of movies", "Slowly discover a way to see the world", "Movies are not about talking, but movies are made", "Recognize yourself, Face yourself". These are all about movies, but none of them cannot be switched to the methodology of architectural design. The so-called art is interlinked, and artists are interlinked.

    Description

From many aspects, not only according to the historical clues, the process of technological development, but also according to the differences of art categories, materials and crafts, the author goes deep into the level of Chinese culture and aesthetic concepts, analyzes Chinese art and crafts, and reveals the most unique and profound level in the history of Chinese art. The author explained that Chinese artists, unlike their Western counterparts, do not seek to faithfully reproduce natural objects, but instead explore ways to replace imitation and directly create thousands or even infinite artworks. He also pointed out to readers how the idea of the module penetrates the Chinese official-standard culture, Chinese religion, and the idea of personal freedom. This book will lead readers to make a profound journey in Chinese art and culture, revealing how complicated Chinese artists are in producing batches of artworks. This system is deeply rooted in China's ideological concept that the universe is made up of everything.

This is an art history book that has a profound influence on me. From the book, I seem to have suddenly discovered the secret of China: the modular structure. The book describes that whether it is bronze, painting, porcelain, calligraphy, or ancient architecture, they are all composed of "modules." This book became the starting point for me to observe, think or create the Chinese style of things: instead of pursuing a complete "shape", but to study the organizational relationships of this world, and design and construct the world in the way of "groups of rooms".

    Description

This book discusses and introduces the classical gardens in China's Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing areas. It is the first garden monograph in China to adopt modern methods for surveying, mapping and photography. Before the Anti-Japanese War, the author visited famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River for field investigation, surveying and mapping photography, and wrote this book based on many years of research experience. This book is divided into two parts: text and pictures. The text part includes five chapters: gardening, rockery, evolution, current situation, and miscellaneous knowledge, discussing the traditional characteristics and general principles of Chinese gardening, explaining the art of rockery, introducing and evaluating the evolution, current situation, and artistic characteristics of famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. In the second edition, the article "Exams with the Garden" and some pictures were added, and more than 340 pictures were collected in total. Some of the gardens mentioned in the book have now been broken or abandoned so that the information in this area are of particular historical value.

    Reason for Recommendation

This book can be said to be very legendary. From 1932 to 1937, Mr. Tong set foot in 27 counties and cities every Sunday for five years, visiting more than 100 gardens in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, surveying and mapping notes, written in the summer of 1937. When the typesetting was published, the Lugou Bridge Incident broke out, and the manuscript was left in Tianjin, part of which was lost and damaged. It was officially published in 1962, when Mr. Tong was 62 years old. It can be said that the process of writing this book is a fragment of the profound disaster history of the modern Chinese nation. Even under such difficult conditions, Mr. Tong left a model of scholarship for the younger generations: "Jiangnan Garden History" has only tens of thousands of words, but there is no word of nonsense from the preface to the main text, and it can even be said that every word is critically. It's worth pondering over and over again. For example, when I just opened the "Author's Original Preface", there was a passage about the surveying and mapping of gardens, "it is not necessary to use the rope and ink", which expresses the unmeasurable nature of gardens, or is to encourage those learners who "carve a boat for a sword".

This book is the earliest work of garden research, leaving an unreproducible record for gardens after suffering. It is also a book that can be read thickly, including "Xian Qing Ou Ji", "Lü Yuan Cong Hua", "Six Chapters of a Floating Life", and "Yangzhou Painting Boat". Records and other Ming and Qing notes, listed the names and locations of various gardens scattered in the south of the Yangtze River, all pointed out the way for future researchers and enthusiasts to continue to explore.

    Description

This book tells the investigation of residential buildings in more than 20 counties and cities in Zhejiang, including Wuxing, Dongyang, Hangzhou, Tiantai, and Shaoxing in the early 1960s by the Architectural Theory and History Research Office of the former Academy of Building Research. It has made more detailed observations and records of some outstanding and typical examples of residential buildings in Zhejiang and a number of treatment methods, such as the treatment of plane and space, body shape, topography, structure and decoration, etc. The examples and treatment methods in the book are selected according to the range of residential houses in history, including houses of poor peasants, middle peasants and handicraft workers, as well as houses of small merchants, rich peasants, and landlords. Most of the current occupants of these houses have changed. The editor conducted an investigation based on the current actual living conditions, and used the current use functions as the criteria for selecting materials.

    Reason for Recommendation

This book is signed "China Architecture Design and Research Institute/Historic Building History Research Institute". If you take a closer look at the writers and drafters mentioned in the preamble, it might be shocking. This is a classic residential monograph like a textbook, from village and town organization, to detailed processing, and even a series of housing examples. There is even a survey and drawing of Fayun Village in Hangzhou. The author uses The line drawing method expresses the architecture incisively and vividly. Except for the introduction of Zhejiang residential buildings in the text, the most valuable thing is actually these hand-drawn survey drawings, which reveal what the sages mentioned above know about Zhejiang residential buildings: which ones need attention and which ones can be ignored. With the development of my professional career and the deepening of the understanding of architecture, this book often has the feeling of frequent reading and new.

    Description

"Western Modernist Architect Theory Research Series-Order and Construction Series" was polished and completed by China Construction Industry Press in three years, including "Homogeneous Order and Clear Construction" and "The interval order and the distinction of things" and "organic order and the nature of materials" are the most unique and in-depth study series among the original works of "Western Modernist Architects" in China.

    Reason for Recommendation

This series is actually three books, supplemented by Tang Fenglong’s doctoral dissertation "The Construction of Geometry-Wright, Mies, and Louis Kahn's Architectural Laws", so they can be regarded as one book together. The book reveals the secret inheritance of the three modernist masters and the inextricable connection with classical architecture. The book analyzes the details of "construction", "order", and "naturalness". It clearly reminds us that the effort of architects cannot be deceived by the trend of imagery since the rise of postmodernism and consumer society. We should grasp the essence of things, the essence of the world, and do more permanent things.

    Description

First published in 1996, The Eyes of the Skin has become a classic of architectural theory. This text combines both a biographical portrait of Pallasmaa and an outline of his architectural thinking, its origins, and its relationship to the wider context of Nordic and European thought, past and present. The focus of the essay is on the fundamental humanity, insight, and sensitivity of Pallasmaa’s approach to architecture, bringing him closer to the reader. This is illustrated by Pallasmaa’s sketches and photographs of his own work. The new edition also provides a foreword by the internationally renowned architect Steven Holl and a revised introduction by Pallasmaa himself.

    Reason for Recommendation

From the title of the representative work of Professor Pallasma, this book is a reaction to today's "media world". Since the age of reading, drawings have always been the core of our design thinking, but in fact our body is the center of the world. How should the boundaries of architecture unfold? Visual expression has become a "golden thread" for us to cocoon and bind ourselves for a long time. To break through the shackles, we need to open our mind and body. This is something that can only be understood but hard to explain, but it must be the starting point for us to experience the architecture and the world.

It mainly includes: Wuchang Donghu Retreat, Wuhan Hospital, some opinions on graduation design guidance, talks about architectural design principles, space principles Introduction, talk about architectural design and landscape architecture, etc.

    Reason for Recommendation

Mr. Feng's articles and pictures are actually not many, and they have been published repeatedly. This book is a masterpiece, including Mr. Feng's essays, works self-reports, media interviews, and several academic conferences, transcripts of essays, speeches, and works chronology. Fast 600 pages of text have contained the most complete record of Mr. Feng's thoughts. When I turn to the incomplete works and regretful self-reports, I can feel the powerlessness and helplessness of the old man. Mr. Feng often describes himself as "an unfinished symphony" for his life. Fortunately, there are still six hundred the text on the page still exists, which is worthy of our repeated contemplation.
